1. Are They the Manufacturer or a Broker?
This is the first and most important question. A manufacturer operates the facility where your product is made. A broker places your order with a third-party facility you’ve never seen, under a quality system you can’t verify. Many supplement “brands” are actually brokers — they design the label and handle the marketing, while production happens elsewhere. Ask directly: “Do you manufacture in your own facility?” and “What is the name and address of the facility where my product will be made?” If they won’t answer specifically, walk away.
2. Can They Provide 21 CFR Part 111 Compliance Documentation?
cGMP compliance under 21 CFR Part 111 is the federal standard for dietary supplement manufacturing. Ask for their compliance documentation and, if possible, their most recent FDA inspection date and outcome. A manufacturer who genuinely operates under cGMP can tell you when their last inspection was and what the outcome was. One who can’t answer this question is not operating at the standard they claim.
3. Do They Have a Documented Quality Disposition Process?
cGMP requires a Quality Control function with authority to approve or reject every batch before it ships. Ask: “Who signs off on batch release?” and “What happens to a batch that doesn’t meet specification?” The answer should include a named Quality function (typically a Director of Quality or equivalent), a documented release process, and a clear answer about what happens to out-of-spec batches (they should be quarantined, investigated, and not shipped). Vague answers here are a red flag.
4. Is Every Batch Tested Before Release?
Ask specifically: “Do you test every batch for identity and potency before release, or do you rely on raw material testing only?” The answer should be every batch. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that over 70% of melatonin supplements deviated significantly from their label claims — this problem stems directly from manufacturers who skip or compress finished product testing. “We test” is not sufficient — you want to know it’s every batch, every time.
5. Can They Provide a Certificate of Analysis?
Request a sample Certificate of Analysis (CoA) from a recent batch of the product you’re considering. A CoA shows the actual test results for that specific batch — identity confirmed, potency within specification, relevant limits met. If a manufacturer is reluctant or unable to provide a CoA, that’s a significant red flag. A transparent manufacturer with nothing to hide produces this document as a matter of standard practice.
6. Is the Formula Documented in a Master Manufacturing Record?
A cGMP-compliant manufacturer maintains a Master Manufacturing Record (MMR) for every formula — a document specifying the exact ingredients, quantities, blend process, quality control checkpoints, and yield specifications for every batch. Ask: “Does this product have a Master Manufacturing Record?” and “Can you share the formula code?” A manufacturer with proper documentation can answer this immediately. One who can’t is operating without the documentation cGMP requires.
7. What Is Their Track Record With Practitioners?
Ask for practitioner references — specifically other healthcare providers who have ordered from them and can speak to the quality and consistency of the product. Supplement manufacturers who work seriously with the practitioner market have established relationships they’re willing to reference. Also look for any practitioner-facing editorial mentions — health blogs, podcast appearances, or practitioner resources that reference the manufacturer’s products independently.
